The Impossible is Now Routine

Sometimes, during the course of doing what you might have thought was a routine simulation, you realize that you are doing something that didn’t used to be routine.  In fact, it may have been impossible without advances in software and hardware in recent years.

Recently, DRD was conducting stress simulation for a casting assembly from Davis Tool & Die of Fenton, MO. As the geometry was meshed and examined, small details of the casting continued to become evident and additional refinement was needed.  As seen in the images below, the model became quite large. ANSYS R16.2 Now Available!

ANSYS, Inc. announced the release of ANSYS R16.2 today. It is available for download for current customers.

The release is a complete installation of the ANSYS Software Suite with some enhancements in products such as AIM, ANSYS Composite PrepPost, and FLUENT but it is primarily a bug fix to the software. One of the more important bug fixes is to the license manager. From the Release Notes:

· It is not necessary to upgrade the ANSYS License Manager at release 16.2. The 16.2 products will work with the 16.0, 16.1 or 16.1 LM1 License Manager. However, the 16.2 version of the ANSYS License Manager was upgraded to FlexNet version 11.13.0.2 to correct the following issues. We do recommend you upgrade if you are encountering either issue:

· The version of FlexNet (11.12.x.x) used in the ANSYS 16.0 License Manager contained a defect whereby if you have more than two INCREMENT lines (in your license file) for the same license feature, these licenses were not getting pooled correctly, meaning that you would not be able to utilize all of the licenses to which you are entitled.

· The version of FlexNet (11.12.x.x) used in the ANSYS 16.0 License Manager contained a memory leak defect which caused the license server to to utilize an increased amount of memory.

Please contact DRD if you need assistance in accessing ANSYS R16.2.

  • Add new machine (or you can simply select an existing server)
    • Specify if it is borrowable and/or laptop
    • Add new server to queue
    • Confirm network
    • Save, or cancel if you need to edit what you had entered
    • Select old server (source server)
    • Move to destination server (the new server or different server)
    • Submit for confirmation
    • Verify the new configuration on the next page and click Confirm (or cancel to edit)
    • The new key will be emailed to ASC and ANSYS team

ANSYS R16 FAQs about Licensing and Installation

Previously on our blog we have posted some helpful licensing debugging tips. It dealt with creating the license key and working with multiple servers. This blog is a list of a half dozen common asked questions during the installation regarding the actual installation including port numbers, license status, and starting the license daemon as it pertains to R16 (some of which has changed over previous releases.

  • How to install a new license on the license server (using the Server_ANSLIC_ADMIN utility?)

1. Launch the SERVER_ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility by going to Start > All Programs > ANSYS,Inc. License Manager > Server ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility. Make sure that you right click on the Server_ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility and choose to Run as Administrator (prior to clicking on it to open the launcher).

2. Once the Server_ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility is launched, click on the button that says Launch the ANSYS License Management Center.

3. The ANSYS License Management Center opens up on a web browser (Internet Explorer 9.0, Firefox 28, and Chrome 36 or greater is needed to function smoothly). If no default browser is setup, IE is used. If IE is not installed, an error is given.

4. On this already open ANSYS License Management Center window, Click the button to “Add a License File” and then it will prompt you to browse to the license key. Make sure you point to the latest license key received from DRD. (Note: When clicking on the Browse button, do not get alarmed if nothing happens when you click on it first time. You may have to hover your cursor around the Browse button and click on it a few times; try clicking on the lower side of the Browse box, till the display pops up prompting you to choose the license key).

5. Once the license key is read properly it will prompt with the message to restart the license manager and say “The License Manager will be restarted when you upload this License File. Are you sure?”. At this point, just hit the button to “Install the License File”.

6. Once the license key is read and installed successfully, the server should start automatically; a pop-up will mention as much. If not, you can go under View Status/Start/Stop/ License Manager and hit the green button to Start the server. This should show that the 3 services, namely “Licensing Interconnect, Licensing Interconnect Monitor and FlexNet Licensing”, are all running.

7. As a visual check, go under C:Program FilesANSYS IncShared FilesLicensinglicense_files and notice your license key is copied over here in this location and name of the license key is ansyslmd.lic.

This concludes the steps to install a new license key.

  • How to do a stop/start/re-read of the license server daemon

3. On the ANSYS License Management Center, click under View Status/Start/Stop/ License Manager, hit the red button to Stop the server (if running already). If you want to start the server, hit the green button to Start the server (if not started already). This should show that the 3 services namely “Licensing Interconnect, Licensing Interconnect Monitor and FlexNet Licensing” are all running.

This concludes the steps to start/stop a license server.

  • How to change the port numbers on the license server

2. Click on the button that says Specify the License Server Machine; this should open up the display to enter the port numbers. Default is 1055 for the ANSYS FLEXlm and 2325 for the ANSYS Licensing Interconnect port numbers respectively. If you decide to change the FLEXlm port number (1055 to something else), make sure the same change is reflected on the first line of the license key which is found stored under; C:Program FilesANSYS IncShared FilesLicensinglicense_files. The name of the license file is ansylmd.lic (open up this file on Notepad, and change the 1055 to the new port number on this first SERVER line in this key).

This concludes the steps to change port numbers.

  • How to check license status from the client machine using the Client ANSLIC_ADMIN utility

1. Launch the Client_ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility by going to Start > All Programs > ANSYS 16.x > ANSYS Client Licensing > Client ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility 16x. Make sure that you right click on the Client_ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility 16.x, and choose to Run as Administrator (prior to clicking on it to open the launcher).

2. Once the Client_ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility 16.x opens up, click on View Status/Diagnostics Options > Display the License Status.

This concludes the steps to display the license status from a client machine.

  • How to check which version of the client software you are using

Couple of ways to check this:

1. Launch Workbench from Start > All Programs and choose the most current one that is on the list (if you have multiple versions installed). Choose Workbench 16.x.

2. Once Workbench launches, go to Help > About ANSYS Workbench to see the build date and release version.
